England and Wales on flood alert

Written By Unknown on Monday, June 11, 2012 | 4:34 AM

England and Wales on flood alert
Large parts of England and Wales are on flood alert as forecasters warned that there will be no respite over coming days from the rain.

The Environment Agency said there was a "continued" risk of surface water flooding from overwhelmed drains across parts of London, East and West Sussex, Surrey and Kent following rainfall of up to 50 millimetres in some areas overnight.

The agency said there are 35 flood alerts across England and Wales, with one flood warning for the River Mole at Charlwood and Hookwood in south east England amid forecasts of further heavy rainfall.

Gemma Plumb, of MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said up to 25 millimetres of rain could fall in parts of the Midlands, East Anglia, central southern and south eastern England with the rain starting to ease off Monday evening.

There will be light rain through central southern parts of England, the Midlands and eastern parts of England on Tuesday with some heavy showers across the rest of the UK.

On Wednesday there will be further showers, the heaviest of which will be across Wales and south west England.

The forecast of further rain comes after parts of Sussex were drenched by between 40 and 48 millimetres of rain overnight, with up to 25 millimetres of rain in parts of London. Miss Plumb warned there would be "no respite" from the wet weather over coming days.

"There will be some dry intervals at times, but at the moment it looks as though it is going to remain unsettled for a good few days now," she said.

The Environment Agency warned people to remain vigilant and check its website and Twitter feed for the latest situation. The agency added that the public was "strongly" advised to stay away from swollen rivers and not to drive through floodwater.

The warnings of further rain come after residents who were evacuated after floods tore through their homes in Wales continued with the clear-up.

Stoke City Youth Player Held Over Murder

Stoke City Youth Player Held Over Murder
Detectives are questioning a youth team footballer on suspicion of murder.

Stoke City FC teenager Andrew Hall was arrested after a 15-year-old girl was found dead at a house party in Ampthill, Bedfordshire.

Mr Hall played for the Premier League team's under-18s side last season and is now in custody being questioned by detectives.

Megan-Leigh Peat died from her injuries after paramedics and police were called to the house at 1.30am on Saturday.

Officers have since been carrying out forensic searches of the property.

Flowers have been left outside the home and blood spots could be seen on the pavement outside.

Tributes to the popular teenager have been posted on Facebook and other social networking sites.

Hannah Louise Watson wrote: "Still can't believe it. You made everyone proud when you never have up and held your head high through the hardest of times and you always helped supporting everyone around you.

"So now is our time to thank everything you've done to help others and thank you for the best memories Megan."

Bedfordshire Police officers are still building a picture of exactly what led up the teenage girl's death.

Stoke City FC confirmed to Sky News that Mr Hall was one of 10 young players who have recently been offered "professional development contracts" to play at under-21 level at the Premier League club.

A spokesman said: "The club are not prepared to comment at this stage other than to say that the thoughts of everyone here are with Megan's family at this tragic time."

The 19-year-old collapsed in the main area at the RockNess festival on Saturday night
A teenage boy has died at a music festival in the Highlands.

The 19-year-old collapsed in the main area at the RockNess festival on Saturday night. He is thought to have taken drugs.

The teenager, from Portobello in Edinburgh, was taken to the hospital tent and stabilised before being transferred to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
Police said he failed to respond to treatment and died in the early hours of this morning.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: "Early indications are that the man may have consumed drugs and this is one of the lines of inquiry at this stage.
"A post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death. His next of kin have been informed."

A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Meanwhile, police last night named two men killed in a road crash involving a bus taking people to the festival.

A van driver and his passenger died of their injuries following a collision with a bus on the A9 at Ralia, in the Highlands.

They are Mark McFarlane, 38, and Barry Murray, 28, from the Glasgow area, both painters and decorators.
